The Last of Us: what happens to the project on Tommy?

Neil Druckmann mentioned “a little story” dedicated to the character of Tommy, set after The Last of Us Part II, but ultimately put aside. This could still exist one day, without certainty on the format.

If you wait The Last of Us Part III or season 2 of the adaptation, you will have to be patient. New episodes of the series are not expected before early 2025. As for the continuation of the game, the director and president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, mentioned it in the documentary Grounded II broadcast on February 2, 2024: “ I don’t have a story, but I have a concept that seems as interesting to me as the first two games. »

Since the documentary interviews were filmed a year or two ago, it is difficult to know if the Part III has since entered the writing phase. Even so, it is clear that it is only at a preliminary stage, especially since the studio is a priori focusing on a new universe. But Neil Druckmann mentioned another aspect of The Last of Us : Tommy, Joel’s brother.

We wrote a story set after The Last of Us 2 that features Tommy, and I hope one day we can make it happen », confirms Druckmann. This is not the first time that he has mentioned this story in an interview, the opportunity for him to recall that it has often been misinterpreted: this is not part 3.

Industry headlines said, ‘Naughty Dog has outlined The Last of Us Part 3,’ but that’s actually not true. It’s always been a little story. It was never about a complete game », he corrects. “ At the time, we had bigger priorities at Naughty Dog, like fixing the way we work, fixing our work-life balance issues. In this situation, I didn’t want to prioritize this story, so it was shelved. »

A series or game about Tommy for The Last of Us?

The rest of the statement indicates, however, that the project is not dead: “ I remain convinced that one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it will be a game or a series… »

So there are two possibilities. A DLC strictly speaking The Last of Us Part IIway Left Behind, is quite unlikely this long after. The “game” format could be more like Uncharted: The Lost Legacythe DLC ofUncharted 4 finally transformed into a separate game, but with a short story.

The mention of a television series is, however, not trivial. We know, via statements from showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, that the adaptation of the Part II at HBO will take approximately two to three seasons. But if the series were to give its final clap before the possible release of a The Last of Us Part III on PlayStation, the team would have a turnkey sequel: either a season dedicated to Tommy, or a derivative mini-series with Gabriel Luna in this role. A bit like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixonthe television universe of The Last of Us could continue via separate works about specific characters.

But this is only hypothetical. The only certainty: the story dedicated to Tommy has been written, and Neil Druckmann seems determined that it will reach us one day in one form or another.
