Little Cedric Errol and his widowed mother live modestly but happily in New York. The quiet happiness of the two is disturbed. Mister Havisham, an envoy from the Earl of Dorincourt, Cedric’s grandfather, appears. He wants to bring the boy to the castle of the aristocratic old man who once rejected his son because he married an American and emigrated to the States.
Ceddie’s mother agrees with a heavy heart, although the old gentleman clings to his dislike of her. She is not allowed to go to the castle, instead she quartered in the neighborhood. Ceddie, now Lord Fauntleroy, is never supposed to find out how things stand between the two. The little grandson of the grumpy grandfather manages to break the stern facade of petrified feelings of the old curmudgeon and awaken his buried feelings.
«Little Lord Fauntleroy, the Victorian youth novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett from 1886, has served as a template for a film adaptation several times. Little Lord: That’s what it’s about
The film “The Little Lord” tells the story of Cedric Errol. His father has died, so the boy lives alone in New York City with his mother and midwife Mary. When a British lawyer visits the family on behalf of the Earl of Dorincourt, Cedric’s grandfather, he makes the family an extraordinary offer.
Since Cedric is the earl’s sole heir, he is to move to England with his mother to be prepared for his future responsibilities. Cedric’s mother only agrees on one condition that the old curmudgeon doesn’t tell her son how much he dislikes her. Cedric manages to win over his grumpy grandfather and soften his heart.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett from 1886. The successful book has been made into a film several times, but the British TV adaptation by director Jack Gold from 1980 has become a classic that is shown every Christmas.
“The Little Lord”: Star Wars and Star Trek stars in the cast
Sir Patrick Stewart is known to many viewers as Captain Jean-Luc Picard from the science fiction series “Spaceship Enterprise – The Next Century”, “Star Trek: Picard” and the role of Charles Xavier from the X-Men film series. In the Christmas classic “The Little Lord” he plays the stable master Wilkins, who teaches Cedric to ride.
