The Lord of the Rings: How many kilometers do Frodo and Sam travel to Mount Doom?

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam set out to bring the Ring to Mordor. A long journey, but how many kilometers do they actually cover?

  • To get from the Shire to Mount Doom, Frodo and Sam travel a huge distance.
  • If we were to make a comparison in real life, it would be roughly the same distance as from Berlin to Lisbon.
  • The journey on foot becomes a real trip around the world. We’ll tell you how many kilometers the two hobbits cover.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) embark on an epic journey to bring the One Ring to Mordor and throw it into the flames of Mount Doom. On their long journey they pass through various kingdoms such as Lothlórien and Moria.

Their journey eventually takes them through Gondor, where they are captured by Faramir (David Wenham), and on to Minas Morgul. From there they overcome the pass of Cirith Ungol and finally reach Mordor and Mount Doom. We take a look at how many kilometers Frodo and Sam covered on their adventurous journey!

From Hobbiton to Mount Doom, Frodo and Sam cover a total of 2,700 kilometers. There are 2,123 kilometers of this in the first volume of the “Lord of the Rings” series alone. To make a comparison, the distance traveled is comparable to a trip from Berlin to Lisbon, Portugal.

According to Google Maps, this journey on foot takes around 602 hours. If we assume that the hobbits walk for eight hours a day, we would have to come to around 76 days. JRR Tolkien writes that the Rings trilogy spans around a year, 365 days. Percy Weasley would now comment that the two hobbits were loitering, but we disagree.

The number of kilometers is just the outward journey. And in the year in which the trilogy takes place, the hobbits also begin their return journey. You have to double the distance because Frodo and Sam also cover the same distance on the way back in the third part. In addition, there are repeated breaks, such as on the way there in Rivendell, when Frodo has to recover from the Witch King’s wound.

The community of the ring also remains in Lothlórien for around a month. That adds up. Frodo left Bag End in “The Fellowship of the Ring” on September 23, 3018 of the Third Age.

One day after Frodo’s birthday

Frodo Baggins sets out to bring the ring to Bree just one day after his 50th birthday. Frodo also shares a birthday with Bilbo: September 22nd.

Frodo finally destroys the ring on March 25, 3019, almost exactly 185 days after his departure. With all the stops and the fact that hobbits have shorter legs than the average person, as well as the fact that the ring also has an influence on Frodo’s physical condition, the hobbits make pretty quick progress.

What is interesting is that the bear part is also disputed from the days in the first volume. The second part begins, at least in the books, with Boromir’s (Sean Bean) death. This is almost exactly a month before Frodo destroys the One Ring.

After the ring is destroyed, another seven months pass before the hobbits arrive back in the Shire. During this period, Aragorn is crowned and the hobbits are honored for their achievement.

A remarkable distance that our heroes have to cover. In “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” the protagonists also go on long journeys. Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings” series is currently being worked on.
