The Lord of the Rings: The Community of the Unemployed – don’t the companions have jobs?
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER
Simply travel spontaneously across Middle-earth for several months – no member of Frodo’s companions had to take a vacation for this. Don’t they all have a job?
In Middle-earth, just like in our reality, there are professions. Gerstenmann Buttercup, for example, worked as an innkeeper in the “Zum Prancing Pony” inn and of course the fields in the Shire are not cultivated by themselves.
But when we look at the Fellowship of the Ring from The Lord of the Rings, who join Frodo in Rivendell to destroy the One Ring in Mordor, professions suddenly no longer matter. Could you immediately set off on foot for Sicily to become a ring in Mount Etna? Probably not! But the companions don’t seem to have any other obligations holding them back. Don’t they all have a job?
The employment center in the Shire has permanently closed
Frodo, like Bilbo, lives off the Baggins family fortune and of course benefits from the fact that they don’t have to pay rent or for electricity or water connections. In addition, Bilbo took on at least one mini-job as a thief and then came home with valuable treasures.
Merry and Pippin live in a similar way, albeit without a treasure, into the day. Sam, on the other hand, is employed by the Bagginses as a gardener and ultimately accompanies Frodo on Gandalf’s orders, but also because Frodo is his employer.
Gandalf is a wizard, but that’s not really a profession and since he’s been around since the beginning of time, the rules of mere mortals don’t apply to him. Gimli, Legolas and Boromir are primarily scions of political families and thus they occasionally represent their family, but are not employed in the classic sense.
Now only Aragorn remains. He is the King of Gondor, which could certainly be described as a job, although he does not carry out this office when he joins the hobbits in Bree. So only Sam actually has a permanent job and is therefore very interested in Frodo making it back to the Shire in one piece.
