The duration of “The Marvels” has been revealed. This would be the shortest film in the MCU.
What if the solution to getting audiences to return to see superhero films in theaters was to make shorter films?
According to the website of the AMC cinema chain, the next MCU film, The Marvels with Brie Larson would last 1 hour 45 minutes, which would make it the shortest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Released in 2019, Captain Marvel, the first film centered on the superhero Carol Danvers, lasts 2h04. Its sequel therefore beats the record for the shortest Marvel film ahead of The Incredible Hulk (2008) by Louis Leterrier and Thor: The Dark World by Alan Taylor (2013) which both last 1h52. The record for the longest film in the house of ideas is held by Avengers: Endgame and its 3h01.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels brings together a trio of superheroines: Carol Danvers played by Brie Larson, Kamala Khan – aka Miss Marvel (Iman Vellani) in the eponymous series and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), already seen in WandaVision .
In this film, Captain Marvel must face the unforeseen consequences of her victory against the Krees. Unexpected effects now force him to assume the burden of a destabilized universe. During a mission that propels her into a strange vortex closely linked to the actions of a Kree revolutionary, her powers mix with those of Kamala Khan – aka Miss Marvel – and those of her “niece”, the Captain Monica Rambeau, now an astronaut within SABER Initially chaotic, this unlikely trio soon finds themselves forced to team up and learn to work together to save the universe. Only one name for it: “The Marvels”!
A film of great magnitude since it links the stories of 3 heroines and whose short duration could therefore be surprising. However, the director Nia Dacosta is well aware of the audience’s fatigue with these films, so it is not impossible that this reduced length aims to address this problem.
She recently declared in the columns of Total Films : “Superhero movie fatigue is real. The main difference with other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be that The Marvels is assumed to be wacky and absurd. The universes that we explore with this film are universes like you have not yet seen in the MCU. Bright worlds you’ve never seen before.”
For the site The Direct, this duration would allow more spectators to come to cinemas. Not only because more screenings can be offered during the day but also because the public is less and less inclined to spend 3 hours watching a superhero film.
