Singer Eloy de Jong (48) had to identify himself as “Maximum Power” on Thursday evening on “The Masked Dancer” (8:15 p.m. on ProSieben). Some jury members had already suspected the former boy band member under the costume. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, Eloy de Jong reveals what music he likes to dance to privately and why he signed a contract with his ten-year-old daughter Indy. He also gives an indication of the monkey costume that he observed behind the scenes of the show.

Congratulations on the fifth place. Are you disappointed that you didn’t make it to the final?

Eloy de Jong: It’s a shame, I would have loved to have danced in the final, but it was a great honor to be there. I can still be at the show again next week. On the other hand, I’m glad that I can go out on the streets again without the heavy “Maximum Power” costume.

How hard was it to dance in the costume? Were you more nervous than usual when you were on stage?

De Jong: You can’t compare it to anything. I love wellness and am an experienced sauna-goer – but being in the costume is like going to the sauna in clothes and then doing a dance there. Then there is the excitement. That’s awesome. Two people had to help me get into the costume in the first place because it had so many pieces. But now I have the best carnival costume ever…

Can you keep the costume?

De Jong: I’ll just take it with me (laughs). Please don’t tell anyone!

Do you think your youthful dance experience and boy band days gave you an advantage on The Masked Dancer?

De Jong: I don’t think so. After all, Ute Lemper, who was the first to get kicked out, was a real world star with a musical career on Broadway. I think it takes a mix of things to get ahead. I tried to really get the maximum out of “Maximum Power”.

Do you have a favorite dance or dance move?

De Jong: For me as “Maximum Power” it was a dream to do a couple dance. The tango with my partner last night was really great. When you manage to talk to the dancing like she does, it’s very touching. I was impressed by myself that after three weeks I was able to dance an Argentine tango in a costume that I could barely walk in at first.

Could you also imagine taking part in other dance shows? For example “Let’s Dance”?

De Jong: That would be my dream! I get a lot of requests for shows. If I can learn something from attending, have fun, and it fits into my schedule, I always say yes. But I would also think it would be cool to be a judge on a show!

Boy band classics, hits or something completely different: what do you like to dance to most privately?

De Jong: I love music from the 80s! My daughter Indy is on TikTok a lot. A lot of old songs from the past come back there. I was surprised when the kids suddenly danced to Boney M. at her tenth birthday party. But I also love modern things, for example the new song by Heidi Klum, “Chai Tea with Heidi” – I think that’s really cool.

Did your daughter know about participating in “The Masked Dancer”? In general, how difficult was it for you to keep it a secret?

De Jong: I’m really bad at lying. I always think it’s important to have three people to share something with. On the one hand, of course, there were my partner and my manager. We only told Indy after a week and put together a small contract with her that she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone.

Did you hear anything from the other candidates behind the scenes? Any foreshadowing of who might be underneath the other costumes?

De Jong: The only thing I can reveal is that I saw the monkey eat a banana. Otherwise I have no idea! You really don’t hear anything from the others behind the stage.

Which of the masks are you keeping your fingers crossed for in the coming week?

De Jong: I know it’s cliche, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for everyone. We all had a part in putting on a great show. Let the viewers decide!
