The audience recognized the “The Masked Singer” finalist Thomas Anders in show one. The singer is not really surprised about that.

Singer Thomas Anders (58) was eliminated in fourth place in the final of “The Masked Singer” (ProSieben). The fact that the former Modern Talking star (1984-2003, “Cheri Cheri Lady”) was treated as one of the celebrities behind the masks from the beginning is equivalent to “Adelung” for him, as he said in an interview with the news agency spot on news says. He also explains the effects of secrecy on his private life.

They ended up in fourth place. Are you disappointed to be eliminated so close to the podium?

Thomas Anders: I’m not disappointed at all. For me the most important thing was not to fly out on the first broadcast. In addition, you have to say that with four great singers it was the strongest finale of the previous seasons.

You are a very successful singer. How much pressure was it on you on this show?

Anders: One of the reasons I love “The Masked Singer” is because it’s a format that celebrities can’t lose. It’s just incredibly personable what happens. It is actually a children’s birthday party with a lot of masks, where you have fun with the joy. Even if you have to go first, you can only be sad because you won’t be able to go on this beautiful journey over the next few weeks.

Your name fell on the audience from the start. How do you explain that? Is your voice that famous and distinctive?

Anders: Yes, apparently it is. I put so much effort into the first show. Nevertheless, the first fans immediately wrote: “That is very clear Thomas Anders. I recognized that from the first note.” For me this is of course something like an ennoblement. But you also have to say that people have known my voice for 36 years. It makes a difference when someone is relatively new to the industry – and by new I also mean five years or eight years or something – then the character of the voice has mostly not yet caught on.

Who did you have to swindle the most for taking part in the show?

Anders: At some point I stopped answering the phone of one of my closest friends. Regardless of Corona, I have completely restricted my social life in the past six weeks. I didn’t even go to the hairdresser anymore because I didn’t want to be pounded while sitting on a chair somewhere. I also only walked very quickly through the supermarket.

What is your advice to future participants?

Anders: I can only recommend one thing to all of the successors: Make a list in your cell phone and write down everyone to whom you have to apologize after the season. There will be many. The same applies to excuses, some of which you should come up with from time to time (laughs).

Did your wife and son know about you taking part in the show?

Anders: Yes. If my wife hadn’t noticed it during the six weeks, it would have been a thing (laughs). My son is in boarding school. He wrote to me that it was a great show, but I’m sure I’m glad it’s over now – and he’s not entirely wrong …

… also because the masks are so heavy?

Anders: It’s not just the masks. It is a very, very big physical and psychological challenge, because in the – ideally – six weeks you cannot calm down. After the show is before the show. When I got home on Wednesday afternoon, the musical meeting for the next song was back in the afternoon. Then the performance had to be developed, on Saturdays it was time to learn the text and on Sundays the rehearsals started again. That was pretty exhausting from the head. And if you suddenly become 14 kilos heavier immediately after putting on the costume, it is also physically demanding.

What was the most surprising experience behind the stage?

Anders: When I came back from the rehearsal, there was a whole tray of fresh lettuce in front of my cloakroom door. “Greetings from the bull [Guildo Horn, a.d.R.]”The turtle has to eat something healthy!” it said on the message. I hadn’t expected that.
