The Mercedes Vision EQXX is arguably the most efficient electric car in the world

Windy down to the last detail: the Mercedes study is expected to travel 1000 kilometers on one charge.

With the study presented in Las Vegas, Mercedes shows how far you can get thanks to its streamlined design.

400 kilometers range? 500, 700? That is not enough, thought Mercedes and is now showing with the research vehicle Vision EQXX how things can go further with one battery charge. The extremely streamlined sedan is said to be the most efficient car the brand has ever built and to achieve a record-breaking range of 1000 kilometers. The study is also intended to provide an outlook on future electric cars from the brand. There are also innovations in the battery system and operation.

Minimized wind resistance

The most striking visual feature of the four-door model is the abruptly sloping rear. The steep trailing edge, which is known from early combustion engine racing cars, among other things, is intended to minimize wind resistance. The same task is performed by the flat front, the flowing roof line and the smooth side walls. The drag coefficient is just 0.17, which is a significant improvement compared to the current record holder for production cars, the Mercedes EQS, with a drag coefficient of 0.20.

In addition to the optimized aerodynamics, a new type of battery contributes to the four-digit range of the EQXX. With a capacity of almost 100 kWh, it is no larger than that of the EQS and models from the competition, but it should be particularly light and space-saving. A solar roof, which should be able to provide an extra range of up to 25 kilometers on long journeys, provides additional electricity. Mercedes specifies the voltage of the battery system at over 900 volts, which means that the Swabians not only top the 400 volts of the EQS, but also the 800 volts of Porsche Taycan and Co. The high value promises very short loading times, but there are no precise details. On the other hand, the drive, which is also not specified in more detail, is comparatively modest; the sedan is satisfied with 150 kW / 204 PS.

The extreme crest is known from old racing cars, and cars like the Toyota Prius also have the spoiler lip.

Mercedes gives more information about the interior. It is strikingly puristic, airy and light and offers a screen over the entire width of the cockpit as an eye-catcher. Other manufacturers have already shown something similar, but the Stuttgart-based company is promising a completely seamless specimen for the first time. The display should adapt spontaneously to the needs of the occupants – among other things, there is a virtual avatar that should serve as a mediator between man and machine. When choosing the interior materials, great importance was attached to sustainability, for example there is a leather alternative made from mushrooms and carpets made from bamboo fiber.

Not a production car

A specific production car will probably not emerge from the Vision EQXX. Findings from the modeling of the body, the development of the energy-dense battery and the 900-volt system should, however, flow into future models. The brand’s next Stromer, the crossover EQS SUV and EQE SUV expected for 2022, will probably come too early for that.
