The independent body EuroNCAP unveils a new batch of crash tests. And once again, Chinese electric cars prove once again that they have nothing to envy their European rivals. This is particularly the case with the MG 4 and the little-known Maximus MIFA 9, which are doing very well. Much better than the Peugeot 408.
The year is coming to an end, and the independent body EuroNCAP is carrying out its last crash tests before 2023. A busy new batch since 14 cars have passed through the hands of experts for this new round of tests. A procedure that is absolutely not mandatorybut which remains a guarantee of confidence for motorists, while constituting a good sales argument for cars obtaining the coveted five stars.
The Chinese at the top…
These tests then test the latest innovations launched on the market and evaluate various criteria, such as protection of child and adult passengers as well as that of vulnerable users such as cyclists and pedestrians. The effectiveness of driving aids is also evaluated, an aspect that has sometimes worked against certain models. This is particularly the case for the Peugeot 408, which only obtained four stars during this round of tests.
It should be noted, however, that the Peugeot 408 has not been fully tested, since the European organization has taken over a large part of the results of the Peugeot 308. It would seem, according to the words of EuroNCAP, that the cars are similar and that the results would have been the same.
In total, no less than 14 cars were evaluated by the organization, including only four electric cars as detailed in the press release. These are the MG 4 and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, two models already sold in France, as well as the Lucid Air, which should arrive a little later. Another still unknown model, called Maximus MIFA 9 and which should be launched in Europe in the coming years is also part of this batch.
While some European models have posted disappointing results, such as the Peugeot sedan, but also the Ford Puma, which will have an electric version in 2025, and the Volkswagen Touran, Chinese cars have done very well.
The prize goes to the Maximus MIFA 9, the electric minivan produced by the SAIC group indeed obtains the score of 93% for the protection of adults and 89% for child passengers. The protection of vulnerable users was assessed at 73%, while driving aids obtained a score of 83%.
Another success for the MG 4, which also achieved five stars. The Chinese compact, rival of the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric with its unbeatable price, obtains respectively 83 and 80% for the protection of adult and child passengers, while it displays the mark of 75% with regard to the vulnerable users. The driving aids (quite decried as we can see in our test of the car) reach a score of 78%.
… but not only
If the Chinese cars, which are today more and more present on the European market, to the chagrin of the specialists, reassure by their excellent notes, they are not the only ones. Indeed, EuroNCAP has also assessed the popular Volkswagen ID. Buzz, which is already almost out of stock. The latter then obtains the rating of five stars, as well as scores of 92 and 87% for the protection of adult and child passengers.
The electric van, which is also available as a van, however, is slightly fishing with regard to the protection of cyclists and pedestrians. It makes up for it on the driving aids side, with an excellent score of 90%.
The Lucid Air also went on the grill and did very well. The very high-performance American sedan indeed got all five stars and received very good marks in all areas. 90% for adult protection91% for children but also 78% for vulnerable users and 84% for driving aids.
The rival of the Tesla Model S, however, can not beat its eternal enemy, which remains the safest car in the world. Evaluated during a previous round of tests, the electric sedan truly broke all records, beating the Model Y until then at the top.
