The morale of French households is stable at 85 points in August 2023

According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) at 8:45 a.m., the synthetic household confidence index in France stands at 85 points in August 2023. Thus, household morale remained stable on a month. With the index clearly below its long-term average (100), the opinion of French households on the economic situation is particularly negative.

In July, the index was 85 points, stable over one month.

What you need to know about this indicator: According to the INSEE definition, “the synthetic indicator of household confidence summarizes their opinion on the economic situation: the higher its value, the more favorable the judgment of households on the economic situation”. The long-term average for this indicator is 100. An index above 100 means that households’ assessment of the economic situation is favourable, and vice versa. During the first 3 weeks of each month, INSEE surveys approximately 2,000 households on 8 major themes: standard of living, financial situation, unemployment, opportunity to save, make major purchases, etc. This indicator summarizes the balances of responses (positive and negative) for this survey. The household confidence index is a good barometer of the short-term outlook for their behavior, particularly in terms of consumption and savings.
