While the public might think that there is competition between Marvel and DC, director James Gunn, who recently left Marvel to lead DC Studios, doesn’t believe that to be the case at all, quite the contrary.
Gone are the days of the war between Marvel and DC! For James Gunn, the success of Marvel films is good for DC. New boss of DC Studios, the director of the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy saga begins the promotion of the third and final part of the adventures of Star Lord (Chris Pratt) and his team, scheduled for release on May 3.
Interviewed by the magazine RollingStoneJames Gunn said that from his point of view, the fact that Marvel films and series make the audience is a good thing for DC and vice versa.
He specifies : “To be honest, I think the better Marvel movies do at the box office, the better for DC, and the better DC movies do at the box office, the better for Marvel. When viewers see bad movies, they don’t want to spend money to see more. So the works have to be good in order to maintain the desire, especially since we plan to make two or three films a year at DC.”
Gunn adds: “Every Marvel movie is an advertisement for comic book adaptations and vice versa. And if we all make good movies, the ball keeps bouncing back and forth. Then we can talk about rivalries and it will be fun.“
Marvel Ant-Man: Quantumania
But superhero films no longer seem to be in the odor of sanctity since the Marvel feature film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, released in theaters last February, has only garnered $474 million to date. the world while the DC movie, Shazam! The Rage of the Gods, on our screens since March 29, has only brought in 128 million greenbacks to date.
Marvel / DC: a possible crossover?
James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently in the midst of revamping the DC Universe. The producer has already announced that the first film, Superman Legacy, will not be released until the summer of 2025. The first phase of the DC Universe, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsterswill consist of around twenty films and series.
In a recent interview with the American magazine EmpireGunn even claimed that a cross-over between the studios could be envisaged: “I’m sure it’s possible now that I’m in charge of DC. But if it does, it won’t be for several years. At the moment we already have to build the new DC Universe, but I would be lying if I said that we have not discussed it.”
