The Mozarteum is in great demand – 500 applicants for ten drama courses

Constance, Buxtehude, Bern or even Holland – no way is too far for them to dream of becoming an actor. There are up to 500 applicants per year for drama at the Mozarteum. However, the effort is only rewarded with a study place for ten of them. The “Krone” took a look behind the scenes.

Heino Ferch, Karl Merkatz or Max Simonischek – they all started their careers on the rehearsal boards of the Mozarteum. In the coming days it will be decided which young talent will also be honored with this opportunity. “I already played in a theater group at school. It just fascinates me, ”Julia-Maleen from Essen tells us. The fascination doesn’t seem to have lost her even during her tenth audition. Like them, many others are not facing an examination board for the first time this week. The entrance exam for drama is anything but easy. And yet hundreds of young people apply for it every year. “Some people hitchhike for three days just to come here” “We expressly welcome applicants from all walks of life”, says Amélie Niermeyer, head of the department for acting and directing. “A candidate hitchhiked to Salzburg from Germany for three days because he had no money for a train ticket,” Niermeyer continued. Graduates of the Mozarteum no longer need to fear professional uncertainty after completing their studies. On average, nine out of ten graduates are employed at a theater. Things are also looking good for 21-year-old Julia-Maleen at the moment. She passed the first of three selection levels.
