The mudflow in the Rauris Valley is as huge as 27 soccer fields

This picture shows the dimensions of the giant debris flow in the Rauris Valley, which engulfed the entire landscape there a few days ago as a result of severe storms. The mudflow at the end of the valley near Kolm Saigurn buried an area of around 25 hectares – that’s about 25 soccer fields.

“It’s unbelievable what quantities have been flushed into the valley here. Fortunately, from the current perspective, settlement areas are not in danger,” said Gebhard Neumayr, area manager of the Pinzgau torrent and avalanche control, after the flight. Above Kolm Saigurn, the so-called Pilatuskar was eroded 70 to 100 meters deep by the flow of water masses, “even for me on this scale a completely new dimension,” said Neumayr, who is convinced that the thawing of the permafrost is responsible for this . The mudslide area in Kolm Saigurn consists mainly of agricultural land. “Primary residences in the valley or the Friends of Nature House and Hotel Ammerer were and are fortunately not endangered, although there are still vast amounts of material on the mountain that could be transported down into the valley in future storms,” says Neumayr get a detailed picture of the situation above the Rauris Valley at Lake Pilatus. “Next week there will be a laser scan flight by Georesearch with a drone in the Sonnblick and Kolm Saigurn area. With this data, the cubature of the amount of debris moved can be calculated more precisely. We hope that we can also draw conclusions about the mobilization of material in the Tauern valleys in Oberpinzgau,” says Fegerl.
