On the occasion of the broadcast of the film The Mummy on Sunday August 21, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1, Télé Star reveals how the weightless scene was created during filming.
Become over time a cult film, The Mummyreleased in cinemas in 1999, was entitled to its remake in 2017. This time, it is Tom Cruise who embodies the main character instead ofBrendan Fraser. Kinda funny when you know that the face of the franchise Impossible mission nearly landed the title role in the film in 1999. French viewers who did not have the opportunity to see this feature film in theaters will be able to catch up on Sunday August 21, 2022since TF1 will air this blockbuster starting at 9:05 p.m.
As is often the case with films starring Tom Cruise, action sequences are ubiquitous on screen. If the original 1999 film has magnificent action scenes, the 2017 remake is clearly a step above this level, as evidenced, for example, by the plane crash scene. During this sequence, the characters embodied by Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis find themselves stranded aboard a crashing plane.
The Mummy: a crash sequence shot partly in France
In order to shoot this scene, which required the two actors to be weightless for the sake of realism, production installed a full-scale aircraft at Novespace HQ in Bordeaux. On site, 40 actors and technicians were able to board a real Airbus A310, in order to get a glimpse of the sensations on board a Zero Gravity flight. The team thus carried out 16 parabolic flights (in weightlessness) of two hours, twice a day for two days to familiarize themselves. In total, the pilots made no less than 64 parabolic flights to shoot the entire sequence.
On their side, the actors had to go through intensive training to prepare for this high-flying sceneas told by Annabelle Wallis during the promotion of the film. “We spent months and months rehearsing these stunts, in padded rooms, to prepare ourselves physically and limber up, much like dancers, so we could move – and no matter which direction the platform or the real Zero Gravity would take us“, she revealed.
