The Mysterious Cities of Gold: a live action remake in preparation for the cult cartoon

The company C4 Productions has just announced the start of a flesh and blood remake for the cartoon “The Mysterious Cities of Gold”!

A cult cartoon from the 1980s is about to experience a new life! In an official press release, C4 Productions indeed announces the development of a live action series based on The Mysterious Cities of Gold!

A cult animated series

Remember… Here, the story began in the year of grace 1532, in Spain, when a 12-year-old boy, Esteban, left Barcelona Cathedral to go and listen to the extraordinary stories of sailors. Thus, he met the navigator Mendoza who claimed to have saved him at sea when he was a baby.

As proof, he had part of the mysterious pendant that Esteban wore around his neck… When his tutor died, Esteban decided to follow Mendoza in search of the legendary Cities of Gold. He then embarked for the New World, on the trail of his origins…

Broadcast (and subsequently rebroadcast) between June 1982 and June 1983, the fiction The Mysterious Cities of Gold was freely adapted from the novel The Gold Road by Scott O’Dell. It has only one season and 39 episodes.

The rebirth of Esteban and his friends

In 2012, the cartoon was reborn from its ashes because the epic of the heroes of the Mysterious Cities of Gold resumed thanks to a sequel, in the form of another series. This time, 78 episodes were produced, the time of three seasons.

Today, more than 40 years after the launch of the original format, the story of Esteban and his friends will therefore be written in flesh and blood now! In the official press release, C4 Productions announces: “Jean Marie Antonini [le nouveau directeur de la maison de productions, ndlr] partners with producer Remi Préchac (Un pour Tous productions) on the development and production of this series as emblematic as it is ambitious which affects several generations.”

This adaptation of the famous cult cartoon by producer Jean Chalopin is developed in fiction, it will take us on the adventures of Esteban, Zia, Tao and Mendoza in search of the mythical ‘Wonderful cities of gold’!” To be continued…
