  • The new Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, was hesitant about Joe Biden’s request for aid to Ukraine. He said Republicans would first introduce a separate bill to provide $14.5 billion in aid to Israel, but needed more information on the Biden administration’s strategy in regarding Ukraine.
  • Slovakia announced on Thursday the cessation of arms deliveries to Ukrainelimiting support to its neighbor to the“humanitarian and civil aid”. There “war in Ukraine is not ours (…). The EU should move from being an arms supplier to a peacemaker”, declared Robert Fico, the day after his appointment as head of a coalition government associated with a pro-Russian far-right party. According to the Kiel Institute, Slovakia provided 670 million euros in military aid to Ukraine in the first year of the conflict with Russia.
  • A Hamas delegation is currently visiting Moscow, according to the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry. Hamas is not considered a terrorist organization in Russia, and its representatives have already made two trips to Moscow over the past year. The spokesperson also announced that the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, responsible for nuclear negotiations, was also in the Russian capital.
  • Russian forces gain ground in the Avdiivka sector, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Geolocated images released on Tuesday show that the Russian army advanced northwest of Krasnohorivka, 5 km northwest of Avdiïvka. The Ukrainian general staff, for its part, reports unsuccessful Russian offensives near Stepove, Tonenke, Sieverne and Nevelske, four localities close to Avdiïvka.
  • Ukrainian authorities ordered the evacuation of children in ten localities near Kupiansk. In total, 275 minors will be affected by this measure. The Ukrainian authorities had already carried out evacuations of civilians around Kupiansk in August, due to the advance of Russian forces, which are around ten kilometers from the city.
  • International Atomic Energy Agency concerned about shooting near Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant. The interception of two drones, during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, near the Khmelnytsky power plant “recalls once again the extremely precarious situation of Ukraine in terms of nuclear safety, which will continue as long as this tragic war lasts”warns the Director General of the IAEA.
