The new Freebox Pop tastes of Wi-Fi 7 but is missing an essential detail

It is now possible to go for a Freebox Pop with a Wi-Fi 7 connection. Be careful, however, the 6 GHz frequency band is not integrated.

We expected it and it has now come to fruition. The Freebox Pop in turn tastes Wi-Fi 7. Free has a series of launches at the start of 2024. After the Freebox Ultra, the new Freebox Revolution and the integration of the security service with Qiara, here is another update up to date with the ISP’s offer.

This new Freebox Pop offer in Wi-Fi 7 is only available with a fiber installation. Therefore, we can be pleased to see this relatively accessible box benefit from a potentially faster connection. There is, however, one detail that immediately stands out. The technical characteristics section of the Freebox Pop only mentions two frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

No 6 GHz band

In other words, the 6 GHz band is not available here, which is necessarily frustrating for Wi-Fi 7. Don’t panic, the speeds remain interesting despite this limitation, provided that the Freebox Pop integrates, on the 5 GHz frequency, a channel width of 320 MHz and 4096QAM modulation as Wi-Fi 7 allows unlike Wi-Fi 6 which is limited to 160 MHz and 1024QAM respectively. In theory, this allows you to double the flow rates.

Without this, users may not notice big improvements in connection. Note that the risk of saturation remains very present despite this, especially if you have many neighbors. The 6 GHz band would have made it possible to avoid these hazards. The official Free website does not give any further details on this subject.

Price and availability of the Freebox Pop Wi-Fi 7

The Freebox Pop Wi-Fi 7 offer includes the Internet box, a Wi-Fi repeater (which can also be Wi-Fi 7 on request), a Free 4K TV player and landline calls to more than 110 destinations.

Count on a no-obligation subscription of 29.99 euros per month for the first year. The price then increases to 39.99 euros per month. Free specifies that it can cover your termination costs with your old operator up to a limit of 100 euros.

Current subscribers who have a Freebox Pop Wi-Fi 6 can upgrade to the new one, for 49 euros.
