The next iPhones could greatly improve low-light photo performance

Faced with the strong competition imposed by Samsung and Google on photo quality, Apple would concentrate its efforts on this aspect for the Pro models in the series iPhone 16.

For each generation of iPhone, Apple puts forward a big argument to justify the purchase of the new model. For the iPhone 15 Pro, communication focused on the titanium design. To a lesser extent, its gaming ability has also been highlighted. And we would already know what Apple is going to focus on to make its successor attractive.

A larger main sensor

According to Digital Chat Station, a renowned Chinese leaker close to the supply chains of major smartphone manufacturers, the Apple brand will heavily emphasize the photography and video performance of its iPhone 16 Pro Max (and probably the iPhone 16 Pro) for its marketing campaign.

For this, Apple would equip its devices with a custom Sony IMX903 photo sensor. If it retains a definition of 48 MP, it stands out in other aspects, and in particular its size. This sensor measures 1/1.14 inch. It’s larger by more than 10% compared to the 1/1.28-inch sensor on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

While integrating a larger sensor is a design challenge for engineers, it offers many advantages. The most obvious is the ability to capture more light, and therefore improve performance when lighting conditions are unfavorable.

Better low-light photos

The IMX903 also benefits from a 14-bit ADC (Analog to Digital Converter). Such depth will allow for greater efficiency during data conversion. In other words, the analog signal will be transformed into digital format more precisely. The photos will thus be more realistic and faithful to reality, with a level of detail and rich color nuances. Here again, it is especially photos taken with little light that will benefit from this.

Another function of the camera is DCG (Digital Control Gain). This helps reduce the noise in an image, which can be present when there is a lack of light and you are forced to increase the ISO to obtain a usable photo.
