The Nikkei ended the year slightly down, but completed its best year in 10 years!

December 29 (Reuters) – The Nikkei index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange ended slightly lower on Friday for the last session of a year marked by its strongest annual increase in 10 years.

The Nikkei index lost 0.22% to 33,464.17 points. The broader Topix, on the other hand, gained 0.19% to 2,366.39 points.

Over the whole year, the Nikkei gained more than 28%, favored in particular by the weakness of the yen against the dollar. It touched a 33-year high in November.
