The Nintendo Switch erases the Wii from tablets

The Nintendo Switch continues its cruising speed, even if it slows down slightly. By shipping more than 10 million consoles in the last quarter of 2021, the Japanese firm now totals 103.54 million Switches shipped, now doing better than the Wii.

Shortage of components? Nintendo barely knows. The Japanese firm continues to ride the wave of success with its Switch that players continue to crave. The last quarter of 2021 (October-December) confirmed the good form of the hybrid console with 10.67 million units shipped, Nintendo announced.

This is nevertheless a lower figure compared to the same period in 2020 (-8%), after a somewhat disappointing third quarter (3.83 million units shipped against 6.86 million a year earlier). But Big N has obviously been less affected by the current crisis than other manufacturers like Sony, which also announced lower figures.

Demand in the 4th quarter was also driven by the all-new Nintendo Switch Oled, which arrived at the end of 2021, as well as by the arrival of still very promising games such as Pokemon Sparkling Diamond / Sparkling Pearl Where Mario Party Superstars which alone can be incentives to purchase. The very last Pokemon Legends: Arceus could thus maintain sales at the start of the year at a good level.

However, Nintendo has lowered its annual forecast for its fiscal year (April 2021-March 2022). Starting from 25.5 million, the Japanese company now predicts 23 million shipments over one year. That would mean shipping just over 4 million units in the first three months of 2022.

In total, the Nintendo Switch and its Lite versions such as Oled now total 103.54 million consoles shipped since the debut of the first coming in 2017. It thus erases the record of the Wii which had totaled 101.63 million shipments during its existence and became Nintendo’s best-selling home console. In addition, it thus grants itself 5th place in the history of the best-selling consoles, behind the untouchable PlayStation 2 (155 million) and Nintendo DS (154.02), the Game Boy (118.69) and the PS4. (116.9).
