The Christmas period obviously allowed Nintendo to sell a few thousand additional Switches.

Sales that have allowed the hybrid console to exceed its illustrious ancestor, namely a certain Game Boy.

The Nintendo Switch is still (and still) a success

Launched in March 2017, Nintendo’s little Switch is about to celebrate its sixth birthday in a few weeks. The first version launched in 2017 was joined a few years later by the small Switch Lite, 100% nomadic, but also the Nintendo Switch OLED, which offers various optimizations, in addition to a larger and better quality screen.

And even though some perceived all lights red “before its release (the fault, among other things, of various obvious technical limitations), the Nintendo Switch very quickly won the hearts of players, thanks to Nintendo exclusives of course, but also thanks to many nuggets from the scene. independent.

The Nintendo Switch stronger than the Game Boy

Nintendo’s console still had a particularly good end to the year, according to the latest figures published by VGChartz. Indeed, during the first week of December, Nintendo would have sold just over 872,000 Nintendo Switches worldwide, bringing total sales to 118.99 million units.

A score which obviously takes into account the various versions of the console, and which allows the Nintendo Switch to outclass a console that is mythical to say the least in the eyes of many players: the Game Boy. The Nintendo portable console, launched in September 1990 in Europe, is indeed credited with 118.69 million sales.

In the ranking of the best-selling video game consoles in history, the Nintendo Switch has therefore just climbed to the third step of the podium. It will still take some time to hope to shake up the two leaders, namely the Nintendo DS with 154.02 million units sold, but also the PlayStation 2 from Sony, which has more than 158.70 million in sales. But who knows…?
