The NordVPN application is now coming to Apple TV

NordVPN officially launches its virtual private network on Apple TV. A native application which should allow Internet users to install the VPN directly on their connected TV, without going through the manual configuration of DNS.

After ExpressVPN, it is NordVPN’s turn to formalize the release of a native application for its VPN on Apple TV. Support for virtual private networks was announced by the Redmond firm during the presentation of tvOS 17, and has been in effect since the general public release of Apple’s operating system. However, none of the major VPN providers had yet jumped at the opportunity. In mid-December, the machine finally seemed to be in motion.

Just presented by Nord Security, NordVPN for Apple TV is already available for download in the App Store. If it was until now possible to configure the VPN on your router or in the Apple TV settings, you had to be patient and not be afraid of getting your hands dirty. The only way to benefit from the service on your connected TV was to download and install configuration files on your Internet box in the first case, or manually modify the DNS of the Apple TV in the second case.

The development of a native app should therefore facilitate the installation process and allow all Internet users to easily use it on tvOS. But above all it should strengthen the effectiveness of the VPN used for its privacy and anonymity protection options. While changing the DNS of your connected TV only allows you to change your IP address to access geo-restricted services, the native version of NordVPN supports the NordLynx, OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols, necessary for establishing an encrypted VPN tunnel. .

Who will be next to enter the race?

A few days ahead of ExpressVPN, NordVPN is the second major VPN provider to enter the App Store on tvOS. We are still waiting for news from the third competitor, CyberGhost, which has not yet officially communicated its plans for Apple TV. We also remember that other less publicized services, like PureVPN and AtlasVPN, had already taken the lead, pulling the rug out from under the popular trio.

When it announced support for native VPN apps on tvOS, Apple said little about its motivations. On the other hand, she insisted on the fact that such a shift should primarily serve the worlds of business and education, without giving more practical details. Still, the arrival of VPNs on Apple TV should mainly delight subscribers of streaming services whose catalogs are subject to geographic restrictions.
