The Oppo Find N2 Flip better in photos than the Z Flip 4? Wait a minute !

The first folding clamshell smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer Oppo, the Find N2 Flip would have managed to do better in photos than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 from Samsung, yet a pioneer in this format. According to the laboratory photo comparison site DXOMARK, the newcomer ranks 69th in the world rankings, ahead of the South Korean in 76th place.

The newcomer will have been able to do better than the pioneer without revolutionizing the format. According to the general ranking of the best smartphones in photo and video from the specialized site DXOMARK, the Oppo Find N2 Flip is better in this exercise than its direct competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. The first is 69th, against 76th for the last.

Released in December 2022, four months after Samsung’s smartphone, Oppo’s first folding clamshell had succeeded in improving on many points the recipe offered by the 4th generation of the South Korean in this format. If our own comparison gave the Z Flip 4 a narrow winner, DXOMARK therefore reverses the result.

Less good in photos, but much better in zoom and video

We are however in agreement in terms of pure photography. If DXOMARK gives Oppo a total score of 114 points, against 112 points for the Z Flip 4, the laboratory tests of the specialized site recognize that the Samsung model retains a slight advantage with its main wide-angle module (score of 125 against 121 for the Find N2 Flip), despite the difference in definition (12 megapixels for Samsung against 50 megapixels for Oppo).

On the other hand, the latter takes over in the video (119 against 113) and zoom (73 against 60) modes, even if neither of them offers a telephoto lens. This is what makes the Find N2 Flip a total score winner for DXOMARK.

Whether in photo or video, the specialized site nevertheless notes that the Chinese smartphone delivers content with very good exposure and a very effective HDR mode. DXOMARK also highlights the balanced rendering that offers little digital noise while maintaining grain and sharpness. In portrait mode, the good depth of field also adds a pleasant background blur according to the tests carried out.

Neither is perfect

On the other hand, DXOMARK still qualifies the advantage given to the Oppo Find N2 Flip a little. The site explains what prevented it from claiming a better overall ranking, even when considering only premium smartphones. The photo modules of the Chinese product show some irregularities in terms of exposure in photos taken indoors and in low light. Similarly, the colorimetry may prove to be less precise on certain shots.

While DXOMARK praises Oppo’s autofocus, they also note a bit of latency when pressing the capture button. Even in video, where it takes precedence over the Z Flip 4, the poor stabilization and the digital noise caused by the movement of the subjects lowers the note a little.

Despite everything, the Oppo Find N2 Flip shows that it is not just a copy of Samsung’s folding clamshell. Despite the popularity of the South Korean’s photo rendering, the Chinese will have managed to be more complete in the eyes of DXOMARK.
