The Paris Stock Exchange closed down 0.38% on Thursday, investors digesting numerous company results, considered mixed, and announcements from the European Central Bank regarding its monetary policy.
The flagship CAC 40 index lost 26.11 points to 6,888.96 points. On Wednesday, it increased by 0.31%, its third session of increase in a row, to finish at 6,915.07 points.
Investors’ attention turned to the European Central Bank (ECB) which left its rates unchanged, after ten increases in a row. The main key rate remunerating deposits, the benchmark for credit in the euro zone, is thus maintained at the historically high level of 4.00%.
“It was an expected decision” and the “reaction of the bond markets is limited”, observes Amaury d’Orsay, head of bonds at Amundi, the leading asset manager in Europe.
“On the geopolitical level, [la présidente de la BCE] Christine Lagarde stressed that there was a risk of rising energy prices and indicated that she remained dependent on data,” commented Christophe Boucher, investment director of ABN AMRO Investment Solutions.
Worldline is catching up a little
After a historic fall of almost 60% on Wednesday, the French electronic payments specialist Worldline rebounded by 13.11% to 10.65 euros. Over the week, its price suffered a loss of 55.97%.
STMicroelectronics congratulated
The Franco-Italian manufacturer of electronic components STMicroelectronics jumped 4.93% to 38.96 euros after announcing a turnover of 4.43 billion dollars in the third quarter, in line with its forecasts, and a net profit of $1.09 billion, according to a press release.
Carrefour and Danone on the rise
Among the well-received results of the CAC 40, Carrefour shares gained 4.74% to 16.36 euros after results above expectations, and Danone, which raised its financial targets, advanced 2.42% to 56 ,20 euros.
BNP Paribas, unconvincing
BNP Paribas dropped 2.60% to 54.72 euros after its “solid” results but with “contrasting trends” at the business level according to RBC analysts.
Among the declines
On the expanded SBF 120 index, Bureau Veritas (-5.66% to 21.34 euros), Ipsen (-6.52% to 111.80 euros), Biomérieux (-1.16% to 86.66 euros) fell back after their results.
Clariane fell from 19.53 to 3.37 euros, a loss of more than 33% over the week.
The action of the automotive supplier Plastic Omnium plunged 22.82% to 10.11 euros after lowering its objectives for the whole of 2023.
