PS5 vs PS5 Slim: will you be able to find all the differences? ©Sony

Freshly made official, the news PlayStation 5 has she revealed all her secrets to us?

Last night, as the end-of-year holiday season quickly approached, Sony took the opportunity to unveil the brand new PlayStation 5 model. If it has not officially been called “Slim”, it however has all the characteristics. Smaller, lighter, this new version intends to replace the first generation model.

Now that this slimmed down PS5 is no more than simple rumors, let’s take the opportunity to carefully observe the elements that allow it to stand out from the model available for sale since November 2020. Besides, do you think the Have you all identified?

A PS5 more modular than ever

Let’s get straight to the point by addressing one of the main attractions of this PS5 Slim: the presence of a removable disk drive. Beyond the size and weight, this is undoubtedly the element that most distinguishes it from its sisters marketed three years earlier.

As you can see in the image below, this new model no longer has just two side panels, as was the case before, but a total of four panels. These, in addition to making it easier for you to access the insides of the machine, will allow you to remove or add a disk reader (which will also be offered separately at the price of 119.99 euros).

Note that the top panels will now sport a glossy finish, while the bottom two panels will feature a matte finish. Finally, be aware that the Japanese company will continue to offer different colors for the fronts of its new console. By paying the sum of 54.99 euros, you will be able to get your hands on the following colors: Midnight Black, Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue and Sterling Silver.

The biggest flaw of the PS5 finally corrected

After the removable disk drive, how can we not mention the regime of this new PS5? If the original model had caused a lot of ink to flow when it was announced, particularly because of its weight and bulk, the new iteration will now feature curves that will harmonize better with your living room. The version with reader will therefore weigh “only” 3.2 kilos (compared to 4.5 kilos for the 2020 model) and will have dimensions of 358 x 96 x 216 millimeters (compared to 390 x 104 x 260 previously).

For its part, the Digital Edition will abandon its previous dimensions of 390 x 92 x 260 millimeters to see its overall volume reduced by 30%. The new dimensions will therefore be 358 x 80 x 216 millimeters. Finally, this PS5 without a disc reader will only weigh 2.6 kilos (compared to 3.9 kilos before the start of its diet).

Two UBS-C ports for the price of one

On the front of the PS5, we can currently find a USB-A port and a USB-C port. With this revision of its console, Sony will replace its USB-A port with a second USB-C port. The era is modern, after all… Concerning the rear of the machine, the Japanese firm has already confirmed that the two USB-A ports will always be present.

While we’re holding you, don’t you see another change in the picture above? But yes, look closely…

Disc ejector moves

If you currently have a PS5 at home, you probably know that the button to eject your Blu-rays is located just above the power button. Well, if you look closely at the previous image, you’ll notice that this one has been moved right next to the PS5’s disc tray.

This is ultimately not really surprising, given that the reader is now offered as a modular element. However, it seemed wise to point this out for those of you who may not have paid attention to this detail.

The vertical support changes its look and comes out of the box…

From now on, the PlayStation 5 will no longer be sold with its support allowing it to be positioned vertically. To take advantage of it, you will unfortunately have to go to the checkout and pay an additional 29.99 euros. To console you, know that it will be compatible with old PS5 models and will abandon plastic in favor of metal.

… but a horizontal stand will nevertheless be present

For those who prefer to place their PS5 horizontally, Sony has revealed that a stand will be included with the new model. We were also able to briefly see it thanks to one of the images shared by the Japanese brand. On the other hand, this one doesn’t look like much and appears as a simple little piece of transparent plastic, which will be nicely placed just below the console.

What else is on the agenda?

Contrary to what one might imagine, this new PS5 will not enjoy better performance than its predecessor. It is a purely identical model technologically speaking, the only differences residing in its storage space (which goes from 825 GB to 1 TB), its design, its size and its weight, or its detachable disk drive. Even the price will be perfectly identical (449.99 euros for the Digital Edition and 549.99 euros for the model with reader). We remind you that it will be available from next November.

For those who are desperately waiting for the announcement of a more powerful PS5, you will probably have to wait a few more months, or more precisely until the end of 2024 with the potential arrival of a Pro model.
