Porsche has started testing the technical components of the all-electric Mission R concept car with the future 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance.
At the IAA Mobilities 2021 in Munich, the Mission R concept car sketched out the vision of a fully electric racing car for the motorsport of tomorrow. Today, the Mission R’s electric-drive concept is starting to burn gum on the racetracks with the integration of some of the technologies seen on the concept into the upcoming Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance.
Like the Mission R, the four-wheel-drive race car uses the 718 GT4 Clubsport chassis. The electric powertrain of the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance is based on a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) on each of the front and rear axles, which can reach a maximum output of 800 kW (over 1088 hp). Porsche says that in terms of lap time and top speed, the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance matches the performance of the current 911 GT3 Cup with a 0-100 km/h shot in 2.5s and a maximum speed of over 300 km/h. Figures that bode well for competition and sports fans.
Björn Förster, GT4 ePerformance project manager, also specifies that the integration of oil cooling of the electric motors and the battery pack developed by Porsche makes it possible to counter energy losses linked to heat. Thanks to the 900 volt architecture, the battery can be charged from 5 to 80% in approximately 15 minutes. The battery, whose cells come from the Porsche Customcells joint venture, has a capacity of 80 kWh.
