What if the PS VR2 virtual reality headset finally lived its best life on PC? Via its blog, Playstation has just announced that the teams are currently in the middle of testing to ensure that the PS VR2 becomes compatible with this platform. Amid announcements of the release of several new games designed for the Sony accessory, the Community Manager drops this little information: “In addition, we are happy to announce that we are currently testing the possibility for PS VR2 owners to access additional games on PC, complementary to those offered on PS5 .“And to add:”We hope that everything will be resolved by 2024.“.
A virtual headset that risks overshadowing the competition
The PlayStation environment has been available on PC for years now. Many Japanese games can already be played on this platform (God of War, Returnal, The Last of Us…) and the catalog continues to grow week after week. Peripherals are also affected, notably the DualShock and DualSense controllers, but the arrival of the PS VR2 risks reshuffling the cards on a market that is nevertheless well established. Indeed, the PS VR2 is a particularly efficient model but also very affordable.
Available for €600, its technical sheet promises for example an Oled screen whose resolution reaches 4000 x 2080 px (2000 x 2080 per eye). Until now, on PC, the entry ticket for similar, or even lower, services is around €1,300, to afford an HTC Vive XR Elite for example.
Drivers available… but not officially
Technically, it is already possible to use PS VR2 on PC using community-developed drivers, such as iVRy. But the operation still requires a little know-how for everything to work correctly and compatibility with all games is not necessarily guaranteed. Sony’s choice to open its headset to the PC world should simplify the process and breathe new life into its virtual reality headset: a move as profitable for the manufacturer as for the players. That is not always the case.
