the rant of a caregiver

The new measures of the health protocol at school, considered very restrictive, have been singled out since the start of the school year. While parents, students and teachers express their dissatisfaction, a pharmacy assistant sounds the alarm through an open letter on her Instagram account.

The start of the school year on January 3, 2022 heralded the advent of new health rules at school through an even more restrictive protocol. If, since December 2021, the wearing of a mask had again been implemented for students and teachers, indoors and outdoors, the new protocol has been established. the obligation to present 3 negative tests over 4 days to return to school, in classes with a positive Covid-19 case.

Faced with these extremely complicated measures to implement for all, and a health protocol constantly evolving and deemed unmanageable, the unions are calling for a massive strike in schools this Thursday, January 13. In a recent press release, the Unitary National Union of Teachers, School Teachers and PEGC described this situation as “indescribable mess. If anger is mounting on the side of parents but also teaching teams, it is also increasing on the side of health professionals. This Sunday January 9, a pharmacy preparer published an open letter on her Instagram account to condemn this untenable situation which plunges everyone into great psychological distress.

An unrealistic health protocol

The young woman, a pharmacy preparer, sounded the alarm on social networks in the face of a situation that is degenerating day by day.

She denounces the outlier of a health protocol impossible to apply for the teams: “We can not do everything. We cannot test an entire school at 7 p.m. because there is a positive case in all the classes”.

An opinion shared by the doctor Martin Blachier, who told us about health protocols at school:

I think it’s madness that all measures for children are madness and don’t walk. The school protocol has been significantly lightened, things are going in the right direction but we have to go much further and free the children.

A health protocol at the risk of mental health

Beyond condemning the practical dimension of this health protocol, the young woman points to a generalized misunderstanding and distress : “Today nothing is going well. Health protocols are constantly changing. The patients are lost, and so are we. Patients are tired, anxious, angry, nervous, and so am I.”.

The pharmacy assistant, confronted for a week with this new protocol, reports the impact of these measures on the psychological state of families who are at their wit’s end:

The children cry, struggle, scream at death, are forcibly held by their parents, too, at their end. Sometimes I refuse to test a child under these conditions, and that’s when the parent begs me crying to test and inflict this suffering on his child otherwise he will not be able to go back to school and the parent has to work, so the child has to go to school the next day. Sometimes the child is positive, and then I see parents panicking, crying, scolding, punishing and threatening the child who “did not pay enough attention in school”.

But the caregiver also describes the impact of this situation on the medical teams who are there to apply the protocol, in these very worrying circumstances: “Sometimes I have to refuse to test because I don’t have time. Sometimes I get attacked, insult all the names, the impression of being thrown to the wolves, because I say no. […] So when I get out of work I cry. I cry to be the one who tortures children, the one who makes children and their parents cry, the one who must forcibly test dozens of children when they leave school. These children who haven’t asked anyone for anything“.

By calling on the government, she denounces a situation where “it is the children who drink to the madness of the adults”. If the children find themselves particularly harmed by these new health measures, this is however absolutely not justified in the eyes of the doctor Martin Blachier who protests :

Neither the vaccination of children nor the school protocol really impact the dynamics of the epidemic. This whole story that it was the kids who restarted the waves of epidemics is wrong, the virus circulates mainly in 15/30 year olds and children are infected through contact with their brothers and sisters, or their parents. There are people who have harmed children without a scientific background.

Faced with this unmanageable situation and the explosion of contaminations identified among nursing staff and working in schools, schools will be on strike Thursday, January 13. Parents, caregivers and teachers hope from this mobilization an electric shock and a government response to the height of this crisis.
