The labor market is picking up further as a result of the spring recovery. The consequences of the pandemic crisis can still be seen, but they are diminishing. There are also rays of hope in the number of vacancies.

The number of unemployed in Germany fell by 84,000 to 2.687 million in May. Compared to May last year, there were 126,000 fewer job seekers, as the Federal Employment Agency (BA) announced. May 2020 is considered to be one of the months hardest hit by the Corona problem. The unemployment rate fell in May 2021 compared to April by 0.1 points to 5.9 percent, compared to May 2020 by 0.2 points.

“In May the first signs of a comprehensive improvement in the labor market are showing,” said the BA’s chairman, Detlef Scheele. “The consequences of the corona crisis are still very clearly visible, but they are getting a little smaller.”

The number of short-time workers also decreased. According to the latest available figures, 2.61 million employees received short-time allowance in March. This meant that the number fell again in March for the first time since November 2020 – when there was another corona lockdown. At its peak, almost six million people in Germany had taken out short-time work benefits in April 2020.

There are also rays of hope in the number of vacancies. In May, 654,000 vacancies were reported to the Federal Agency, 70,000 more than a year ago. However, the number is even lower than in March 2020 – the last month before the first corona lockdown.
