the removable disk drive raises big doubts about the durability of the console

It appears that resetting the new PS5 removes authentication from its removable disk drive. A behavior that could undermine the durability of the console.

The new PlayStation 5 “Slim” has arrived on the market in several countries, but not yet in France. Numerous videos of the console are relayed on the web, explaining in particular the operation of its detachable disk drive.

If we knew that it had to be registered online to work on the console, it would seem that this process would have to be carried out every time the console was reset.

A not-so-durable disk drive?

This is the platformDoes it play?» who shared his discovery on X (Twitter): according to these preservation specialists, users will have to register their disk drive again on Sony’s servers after a system reset. This behavior would also affect the model of the console which automatically integrates a disk reader.

If for the moment, no problem is to be deplored with this operation, it is the question of the preservation of the console that we could be concerned about. We wonder what will happen to this authentication service in two generations, even if we can be optimistic when we know that Sony has been keeping the PS3 infrastructure on life support for two years.

However, we can hope that this authentication process can be maintained online thanks to the little bandwidth that it can exploit. Or that Sony will eventually offer a local alternative on the console.

Good news, however: if an external disk drive is already registered on a PlayStation 5, it may work well on another console. Sony has therefore thought carefully about the repairability of its system, the opposite would have been surprising.
