The Rings of Power: Can a Time Warp Save The Lord of the Rings Series?

It’s been almost a year since The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power launched on Amazon Prime Video. While some fans have celebrated the fantasy series, there have been many critical Tolkien fans. Above all, the storytelling was criticized. We’ll tell you why a time warp in Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings series could fix this shortcoming!

Filming has already been completed and there is no promotional material. Only a few new actors and actresses have been confirmed, as well as the role of the Elvish shipwright Círdan. It is still unknown how the plot will continue.

The Rings of Power Season 2: A time warp would give the plot more stringency!

The Amazon series squashed many events from Tolkien’s stories and changed the timeline quite a bit in the process. Thousands of years suddenly become only a few years and elf smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) lives at the same time as Isildur (Maxim Baldry). In the books there are about 1500 years between them.

Fans have already criticized that alone, but if you don’t want to change the actors and actresses every few episodes, then there’s probably no way around it. In terms of dramaturgical stringency, it makes sense to compress the events a little.

However, what was harshly and probably a little rightly criticized is the fact that the series has a lot of characters and a lot of plot points are established and literally rattled off. There are many scenes where things are explained at length, but those unfamiliar with Tolkien’s works might have trouble following.

In the second season it goes on and some new plot elements have to be established and some highlight events from Tolkien’s works that have to be in the series have to be introduced first. In order to tell a more eventful plot, it is therefore worth jumping back in time.

The Lord of the Rings: This is how “The Rings of Power” would really get down to business!

At the end of the first season three rings of power were forged, Halbrand or Sauron (Charlie Vickers) went to Mordor to gather his powers there. Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle) is currently being radicalized on Númenor and mithril is being mined in Moria. How does it go from here?

The next relevant story points are probably the colonization of Middle-earth by the Númenóreans, Sauron’s beginnings to make war, Celebrimbor’s friendship with the dwarves and the forging of the other Rings of Power and in Moria the conflict with the Balrog.

In order to get to the point quickly, a time jump could skip large explanatory scenes. If we go a few years into the future, the Númenóreans might already be colonizing Middle-earth, Sauron might already have made Mordor a strong land, and Celebrimbor might already have forged the other Rings.

Because it is only through these events that there are new power structures and dynamics between the individual peoples and the characters in Tolkien’s world. And let’s be honest: Who would like that on Númenor there will continue to be a political discussion about how to deal with Middle-earth?!

The good thing about the events that can take effect directly through a time jump is that they are sort of self-explanatory and logical. However, the introduction would probably take some time. It would be correspondingly efficient to use a small time jump. And since elves, dwarves and co. only age slowly, you wouldn’t even have to change the cast.
