The Rings of Power: Not Sauron – that’s why The Stranger can’t be a “Lord of the Rings” villain!

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

The soundtrack to “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” anticipates it: The stranger cannot be Sauron or a villain, but a wise wizard!

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power soundtrack could reveal the stranger’s identity.
  • In the track “Wise One” the melodies of the stranger and Nori can be heard. A clear indication that the stranger is kind and wise.
  • As the “Wise One”, the Stranger could be Gandalf or some other wizard from the Tolkien Legendarium.

The greatest mystery in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the true identity of the Stranger, portrayed by Daniel Weyman. Is he Sauron? Is he Gandalf or some other wizard? There are many theories, and while Daniel Weyman himself doesn’t commit to our exclusive interview, we do have one relatively foolproof theory!

The stranger will not turn out to be a villain in the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but a sage. The Bear McCreary soundtrack track listing says it all, as the third to last track, titled “Wise One,” blends Nori’s (Markella Kavenagh) musical theme with that of the stranger.

After listening to the track we think of a farewell scene or a big revelation in which the stranger realizes his role in the world. That the theme of the stranger is taken up in a track called “Wise One” is relatively clear and suggests that the stranger is a magician.

According to Tolkien, the Istari, the sorcerers, do not come to Middle-earth until the Third Age, while The Lord of the Rings series is set in the Second Age. But it is quite possible that the stranger is another incarnation of Gandalf and Co.

Presumably, the stranger was sent by the Valar to aid in the burgeoning battle against Sauron. If his quest is successful at the end of the Second Age, he will return to Valinor to be sent back to Middle-earth again in the Third Age. At least that’s how it could go.

We’ll surely find out more as the season progresses. Every Friday there are new episodes of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1 in the Amazon Prime Video streaming program.
