Elven ruler Gil-galad fears for the future of his people in the fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. He sees the solution in the valuable metal mithril, which can only be found in the dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dum. But King Durin III forbids the elves to help.

Durin III’s son Durin IV is anything but pleased, for he has a close friendship with the Elf Elrond, whom he doesn’t want to abandon. But the aged king has his reasons why he doesn’t want to dig deeper for mithril.

Durin III tells his son the story of the origin of the dwarves and reveals that further digging of the mountain would deprive them of their foundation. The king wants to live with what the kingdom has to offer and not continue to seek riches more greedily. He suspects dangers in the depths of the mountain.

At the end of the episode, we see that Durin IV’s own expedition has even awakened a Balrog of Morgoth that dwells in the depths of Moria. So Durin III should be right. However, his fear of danger is not the only reason why he refuses to help the elves.

The dwarves were not created by the same god as the elves. The Elves are descended from the Supreme God, Ilúvatar. This created Elves and Men and has his own motives, which he does not reveal even to his closest confidants, the Valar. So Durin assumes that the dying of the elves, if one may call it that, is Ilúvatar’s plan, and does not wish to interfere.

We will find out how the story with Durin III, Khazad-dum and the valuable mithril continues on October 14, 2022 when the finale of the “Lord of the Rings” series will be released in the Amazon Prime Video New Releases programme.
