The rule of thirds, this fashion tip to know for flawless looks (it highlights all body types)

Do you know the rule of thirds? We explain to you how to apply this fashion tip to improve your style and highlight your figure.

Dressing well is not always easy. And it can even become a real headache when there is something at stake, like a romantic or even professional date. Indeed, sometimes we really want to make a good impression by sporting an impeccable and trendy look but despite our latest purchases, we feel like we don’t look like anything in our outfit. And it’s not necessarily just an impression.

Indeed, in fashion design, there are rules to apply to stylize outfits and above all highlight the body shape. Rules that Cristina Cordula tried to instill in us for years in her makeover show. But that we have probably already forgotten. Fortunately, thanks to social networks, the best fashion tips are now at your fingertips.

The rule of thirds explained by a stylist

And instead of following fashion influencers and desperately trying to reproduce their expensive looks, it’s better to follow advice from a real stylist. On TikTok, the New York stylist Liz Teich regularly provides valuable advice for improving your style. And recently, the stylist explained to us the rule of thirds.

The idea of the rule of thirds is simple, instead of dividing your body in two, you should divide it into three. That is to say, instead of composing your looks by thinking of 2 parts: the top and the bottom, you must compose them by thinking of 3 parts. The first part includes the upper body up to the waist. The second part goes from the waist to the knees. And the third and final part goes from the knees to the feet.

How to apply the rule of thirds in your looks

To illustrate her point, the stylist shows the striking difference between two looks. The first is to wear a sweater over jeans. The style is therefore divided into 2 parts: the top with the sweater and the bottom with the jeans. But thanks to the rule of thirds, the stylist decides to stylize the middle part that was forgotten, by tucking the sweater into the jeans and putting on a belt.

In the video we see right away that this look is much more stylish. But, the problem with this rule is that women who are not comfortable with their figure will have difficulty adopting it. Indeed, it is easy to think that this rule of thirds is only suitable for women with model looks. This is where the stylist explains how wrong we are to think that.

A ruler that suits all body types

In the caption of her TikTok publication, the stylist writes: “I’ve seen clients resist tucking in their tops because they were embarrassed by their size (like many of us!), but once they saw the difference, it changed everything for them. It’s about a change of state of mind, because most of us only see our ‘problem areas’, but when you highlight the good things (like accentuating the waist), it takes the focus away from it.

She continues: “Believe me, I went through this after having taken 4 sizes bigger after giving birth and I was totally aware of it. My client today was also in this situation and hid behind big sweaters with caused by the effects of hormones. When we focused on her size, she looked (and felt) like a whole new person.” You will have understood, this rule of thirds is suitable for all body types. So go for it!

@thenewyorkstylist Why you need the rule of thirds in styling… 📐🖼️ I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: following this rule may 👏🏻 change 👏🏻your 👏🏻 life👏🏻 and you CAN do it. I’ve had clients resist tucking in a top because they’re self conscious about their mid section (as so many of us are!) but once they see the difference, it changes everything for them. It’s a mindset shift because most of us only see our “problem areas” but when you enhance the good stuff (like emphasizing a waist), it distracts from it. Trust me, I’ve been there after 4 sizes bigger postpartum and totally conscious too. My client today was even going through this struggle and was hiding behind big sweaters after the effects of hormones. When we emphasized her waist, she looked (and felt) like a whole new person. #fashiontiktok #ruleofthirds #fashioninspo #millennialsoftiktok #sweaterweather ♬ Dancing In The Moonlight – 苏颜悦
