The Samsung SmartTag 2 could be as “closed” as Apple’s AirTag

We have more and more details on the next Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2: after the design, it’s the turn of its operation. Unfortunately, everything suggests that the system of the next SmartTag is just as closed as that of Apple with its AirTag.

At present, there is no standard on connected key fobs, that is to say no universal system to detect those lost by any smartphone. And this is valid in a more pernicious sense: no system that works on all telephones exists, which makes it impossible to prevent tracking. At first glance, Samsung would be no exception to the rule with the Galaxy SmartTag 2, its second connected key ring. While we thought it would be announced at the same time as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, it seems we still have to wait.

SmartThings Find and nothing else for the SmartTag 2?

As reported 9to5Googlethe sales site MobileFun published a sales page for the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2. We can read there that the object works with SmartThings Find: it “ lets you add some smarts to your home. If you don’t know where your keys are, just check the SmartThing app to locate them easily, quickly and efficiently. »

This is the equivalent to Apple’s Find My app for AirTags and Google’s network, Find My Device. It aims to be compatible with all Android and Apple devices: moreover, for the past few weeks, the Locate application on Android can detect if you are being followed by an AirTag.

But this would not be the case on the side of Samsung. Indeed, the brand does not seem to promote this network on the published sales page. This means that if you lose your keys, they will only be located if a Samsung smartphone passes by. Which drastically reduces the chances of finding them.

What we know about the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2

What is official is that the tracer was certified at the end of July by the FCC, the American commission in charge of communications. What to learn that the device uses Bluetooth Low Energy as well as Ultra Wideband: the latter will allow a more precise location. A technology that was already found on the SmartTag+, an evolution of the first SmartTag of the name.

Another major change: the design. No more small black or white plastic square. Same colors, but here the Galaxy SmartTag 2 would be in the form of a flat pill with a large hole on the top to attach its key ring. Compared to the launch date, there is none at the moment: the FCC certification indicates that it will be able to publish all the certified information on January 27, 2024. We can think that Samsung presents its plotter shortly before this date.
