  • Samsung is working on a smartwatch with a retractable display.
  • A patent shows the concept. It offers several advantages in everyday life.

With the Galaxy Gear, Samsung presented a futuristic smartwatch in 2013. The current model Galaxy Watch 4, on the other hand, looks confusingly similar to an analog watch. But Samsung has not lost its soft spot for unusual smartwatch design, as a recently discovered patent shows.

According to a report from LetsGoDigital, Samsung has filed a patent for a retractable smartwatch. The watch shown in the patent has two display halves. With a simple push of a button or with a finger movement, both displays should be pulled apart and the display area enlarged by up to 40 percent. In addition, both screens can also be adjusted independently of each other.

What are the benefits?

At first glance, the concept seems relatively nonsensical, but the design offers several advantages. The first advantage is the possibility of integrating a camera in the clock. There is a strip between the two displays that offers space for a camera.

Another advantage is of course the saving of space. In the most compact version, the clock is quite small and easy to use, while the largest setting makes for clearer screens. In addition, the two displays should also be able to be operated separately from each other. For example, you can use the lower touchscreen for the keyboard while typing a message or e-mail on the upper one.

When can we expect such a watch?

Even if patented ideas often form the basis of future products, that is by no means a guarantee that the project will be implemented. Still, it is not impossible that such a smartwatch will be released by Samsung at some point. However, there are still no concrete indications of this.
