The sequel to this cult 80s sci-fi film reveals its first photo and a major change

Jared Leto has released the first photo from the science fiction film “Tron: Ares” directed by Joachim Rønning. A visual that announces a major change.

In planning for many years, Tron 3, titled Tron: Ares, began filming at the end of last January. Jared Leto, who plays the title role, has just revealed the first photo from the feature film.

The actor appears from behind, dressed in the black and red jumpsuit of his character Ares, a fictional character who passes from the world of video games to the real world. On the side of the costume we can see a stick-shaped weapon which differs from the luminous discs present on the heroes’ suits from previous feature films.

A major change

Another remarkable fact: the red color of the costume. In the Tron universe, characters who wear this suit are usually on the antagonist side rather than the heroes whose suit is blue in the first two films. A color which would therefore confirm that Ares is a malicious program venturing into the real world. At least at first, because Disney is unlikely to make its hero a villain.

In Tron: Aresa highly sophisticated program called Ares is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission which will mark humanity’s first encounter with beings endowed with artificial intelligence… In the previous installments, humans found themselves in the Grid, but here it’s the opposite, an AI born in the Grid will end up in our world.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, already at work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge and Maleficent: The Power of Evil, the feature film also stars Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins.

Not a continuation of the previous parts

Note that this feature film will not be the sequel to Tron, released in 1982, and Tron: Legacy released in 2011.

The first Tron movie starred Jeff Bridges as video game creator Kevin Flynn. The latter found himself warped inside his game, forced to participate in gladiatorial games from which he could only escape with the help of a heroic security program. Although the feature film was not a commercial success (it grossed $50 million in theaters for a budget of $17 million), it acquired cult film status thanks to its release on VHS.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun 2), the sequel titled Tron Legacy was released 29 years later. Jeff Bridges reprized his role opposite Garrett Hedlund, who played his son, Sam Flynn. Seeking to unravel the mystery of his father’s disappearance, the latter finds himself drawn into the same world of fearsome programs and deadly games where his father has lived for 25 years. With a budget of $170 million, the film only grossed $400 million internationally and Disney chose not to continue the narrative arc of the heroes of the previous opuses.
