A new change
Ironically, Albert Kim himself had already replaced creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at the start of the project. It is therefore the executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani who take over the position of showrunner for the next two seasons ofAvatar: The Last Airbender. Kim remains executive producer of the Netflix series but has simply decided to take off for new horizons.
As pointed out The Hollywood Reporter, Kim’s above all ambition was to lay the foundations of the series in its first season. Considering the show took several years to come to fruition (it was ordered by Netflix in 2018), it’s no surprise that Kim is ready to move on.
He should also soon sign an agreement with Disney’s 20th Television branch to develop new projects there. He will also join the team of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians as executive producer.
Avatar: The Last Airbender remains in good hands, however, as Boylan and Raisani were both hired by Kim himself. In addition to being a producer, Boylan has already demonstrated her talents as a screenwriter in numerous series including Leverage, Castle, The Punisher and more recently, Poker face.
Raisani also has several strings to his bow. On the first season ofAvatar, he contributed to the direction (episodes 3 and 4) and to the supervision of visual effects. He has also previously worked in this branch on other Netflix series such as Lost in space And Stranger Things.
The first season ofAvatar: The Last Airbender was a great success on Netflix, and still sits in the top 10 of the most viewed English-speaking series on the streaming platform, six weeks after its release.
It is therefore no surprise that the show was renewed for two additional seasons which will conclude its story at the end of season 3, in a structure similar to that of the original Nickelodeon animated series. No release date has been announced but The Digitals will obviously keep you informed.
