The Simpsons: Did Homer Foresee Twitter’s Renaming X?

THE SIMPSONS

The Simpsons have often been able to seem to predict the future. Now the cult animated series is said to have known in 2012 that Twitter would be renamed X. Fact or Fiction?

  • The Simpsons have been holding up a mirror to society since 1989, and occasionally we even get a glimpse of the future.
  • But not every future prediction from the series actually existed, edited screenshots keep circulating.
  • So what about the image of Homer who appears to have installed the new X-Twitter app?

The tiger attack on Siegfried and Roy’s show, smartwatches, the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney – all of this was discussed in “The Simpsons” before it actually happened. With a little creativity and the long running time of the series, it actually goes without saying that fiction and reality occasionally meet.

However, the popularity of these “Simpsons” predictions now and again causes problems. Fake screenshots are regularly circulating, predicting the fire in Notre Dame or the corona pandemic, for example. So be careful!

Set with X, …

A screenshot from “The Simpsons” is currently circulating on Twitter – or X, as the social media service is now called – showing Homer holding an iPhone in his hand. It features an X logo that looks exactly like the Twitter app’s new logo. Was Nostradamus sitting in the “Simpsons” author’s room again?!

No, this is also a fake picture. In the 23rd season, the corresponding scene can be found in Episode 21 entitled “Sleepless with Edna”. There you can clearly see that Homer has not installed the X app, but a navigation app. So not too much was simply interpreted into an old episode here, but the original picture was deliberately adapted.

It cannot be ruled out that “The Simpsons” will still address the Twitter renaming, but production of the series is currently at a standstill. Due to the writers’ strike, no more new episodes will be written until Disney addresses the writers’ demands.
