“The single market is Europe’s greatest success”


INTERVIEW – For Carl-Henric Svanberg, president of AB Volvo and of the European Roundtable, Europe must give itself the means to take part in a race that has become global.

The European Roundtable (ERT) brings together some sixty leaders of European multinationals. Its president, the Swede Carl-Henric Svanberg, president of AB Volvo, pleads for the European Union to complete the harmonization of the internal market.

LE FIGARO. – What has the construction of the single market brought to the European economy?

Carl-Henric SVANBERG. – The single market is perhaps Europe’s greatest success. It brought freedom of movement for goods and services, capital and citizens – allowing us so many things that we now take for granted. But as manufacturers say, when a project is 80% complete, 80% remains to be done! We are living at a critical moment. The digital revolution will fundamentally change our societies. The ecological transition is also a major and very costly transformation. And the two subjects are linked because digital innovation feeds the greening of the economy.
