VLadimir Putin recognized on Monday February 21 the independence of the pro-Russian separatist regions of eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Lugansk. The Russian president ordered his army to “keep the peace” in these two self-proclaimed “people’s republics”. The Kremlin has also signed mutual aid agreements with these two entities whose populations are largely Russian-speaking. Cyrille Bret, geopolitician specializing in Russia, co-founder of the EurAsia Prospective site, deciphers for Point Moscow’s motives.
