In this headlined press release, “The Internet Year 2022 Internet, reflection of a society without filters”Médiamétrie tells us that “ 45 million French people surf the Internet every day, i.e. almost 3 out of 4 of them”. If in 2022, the average time on the Web in France (2 h 18) is higher than the average observed at the start of the Covid-19 crisis (2 h 6), we spend a little less time online than ‘in 2021, the year we surfed 2h26 a day.

According to Médiamétrie, “with 4 hours of average surfing time per day, young people spend almost twice as much time online as the average Internet user”. The popularity of social networks is exploding and mobile applications are becoming more and more important. We went from 4 services used daily in 2017 to 9 in 2022. Even more impressive, these few platforms concentrate 93% of the time spent on the Internetwhich leaves only 7% for traditional sites and portals.

The French mainly use their smartphones

The French thus spend 57% to 83% of their time online on social networks, regardless of their age group. TikTok, WhatsApp and other SnapChat are the big winners in this race for the attention of the Internet user. In effect, 6 out of 10 French people spend an average of 52 minutes there per day, 7 minutes more than a year ago. We certainly spend less time online, but we spend a lot more on the services offered by Meta, Snap and ByteDance.

The Frenchman nevertheless uses the Internet for purposes other than social networks. Although the economic crisis is being felt hard, the desire to consume remains. France has 42 million online buyers and food delivery sites and sites and apps attract nearly 9 million Internet users each month.
