the State launches a Games accessibility guide for people with disabilities

On the occasion of World Mobility and Accessibility Day, Tuesday April 30, the public authorities published an accessibility guide for the Paris 2024 Games for people with disabilities, in the form of an infographic.

In fourteen animated “maps”, the State, in collaboration with the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee (Cojop), the city of Paris and the main transport operators concerned (RATP, SNCF, Ile-de-France Mobilités, Aéroports of Paris), presents the various accessibility measures put in place during the Olympic Games (from July 26 to August 11) and Paralympic Games (from August 28 to September 8) for which 3 million people suffer from a disability, including 350 000 in wheelchairs, are expected.

Available at https://desjeuxpourtous.fr, the infographic is distributed on the websites and networks of social ministries and Cojop. It is subtitled, described in audio, translated into sign language, and work on colors and contrasts has been carried out to make it accessible to all types of disabilities – a FALC version (for easy to understand, particularly for people with mental disabilities) and another in English will be available in May.

The digital tool explains that 280,000 places in competitions are reserved for people with disabilities and their companions. The infographic also explains how to prepare your trip for the Games, how to travel by transport through the streets of the capital or access the Olympic sites and details all the assistance devices provided according to the types of disabilities since leaving a plane or a train to the competition venues.

1,000 accessible green taxis

During the last interministerial disability committee, in September 2023, around ten measures were listed as priorities to achieve universal accessibility in transport, including: the generalization of visual and audio accessibility of the historic Ile-de-France metro, the increasing the number of elevators in stations or even training taxi drivers to welcome people with disabilities.

Only line 14 (automatic and the latest entry into service) which will be extended to Orly airport, to the south, and to Saint-Denis Pleyel (near the Olympic village), to the north, is fully accessible. The public authorities prefer to highlight the fact that all means of surface transport in the Ile-de-France region (bus, tram) are accessible, as are all of the RER A and B stations (65 in total).

Aéroports de Paris, for its part, argues that the possibility of keeping one’s seat up to the plane doors will be effective during the Games before being generalized. President Emmanuel Macron’s promise to deploy by the summer a fleet of 1,000 green taxis – the condition for the granting of public subsidies – and accessible to wheelchairs should be kept. At the end of April, around 700 were in circulation on the streets of Paris. “The objective will be achieved”assures the Minister of Transport, according to whom more than 900 vehicle orders had been recorded by the Police Prefecture in February.

The State recalls that it has granted a budget of 1.5 billion euros in total for making France more accessible by 2027, including 430 million euros for stations, 300 million euros aid to establishments open to the public or even 500 million intended for communities. “The State wishes to make these Games an accelerator of change for the inclusion of people with disabilities”, outlines a map of the infographic. A clear and ambitious objective but too often ignored in recent years.
