At the start of 2024, Atari and MyArcade are taking us back several years by formalizing a brand new retro console. There Steam Deck just have to behave.

In recent years, the portable console market has seen a surprising resurgence of interest. While the Nintendo Switch is experiencing unparalleled global success, various players, including Valve, ASUS, and Razer, in turn wanted to have their share of the pie by marketing their own portable consoles.

Far from beautiful graphics and the race for power, Atari has just announced the Game Station Portable. A retro portable console that has only one ambition: to seduce the most nostalgic among you!

Atari unveils a “new” portable console

It seems that the best jams are made in old pots. At least, that’s probably the opinion of Atari, which, after announcing the launch of three new consoles, is preparing to return stronger than ever to the wonderful world of retrogaming. Let us also remember that the Atari 400 will soon make its comeback in an updated version.

Anyway, in collaboration with MyArcade, Atari took advantage of CES 2024 to present a brand new fully portable gaming system, primarily intended for retro lovers that we are: the Game Station Portable.

Equipped with a 7-inch screen, this new console features a directional cross, a joystick and a trackball. We also find the presence of two USB Type-C ports, a paddle controller and a digital keyboard. Like Nintendo’s hybrid console, a kickstand is present at the back of the machine.

The Portable Game Station will nevertheless benefit from an interesting little feature: the keys will be surrounded by LEDs to indicate to players the commands to execute. This will allow users less familiar with Atari games to not feel lost in the middle of all these buttons.

Game Station Portable: more than 200 retro games on the program

As part of CES 2024, which took place last week in Las Vegas, MyArcade confirmed that the Game Station Portable would feature no fewer than 200 games (without unfortunately specifying which ones). Finally, let us mention that unlike Valve’s Steam Deck and the ROG Ally offered by ASUS, this new Atari portable console is not based on Windows or SteamOS.

Expected for the end of the year, the Game Station Portable should more precisely see the light of day between September and October 2024. However, you will have to pay the sum of 149 dollars to hope to get your hands on it. If nostalgia is sometimes good, it also often has a price…
