Confined until then to a definition of 800p, the Steam Deck will soon be able to equip itself with a beautiful 1200p screen with the aptly named DeckHD.

The company FX Technology has indeed split an announcement to this effect and has opened pre-orders for deployment this summer.

Valve’s handheld/PC hybrid continues to expand its arsenal, both through Gabe Newell’s company and third-party partners. With repairability and the sale of spare parts at the heart of the considerations, the possibility of installing a new screen is looming.

Still in 7-inch IPS, the DeckHD therefore proposes to significantly improve the original screen of the Steam Deck. This goes from a resolution of 1280 x 800 to 1920 x 1200 pixels. But that’s not the only thing this product from FX Technology offers, as it also boasts 95% sRGB coverage, compared to 67% for the original model.

For the rest, we are on familiar ground with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a brightness of 400 nits. Anti-reflective is also included, as on the most expensive versions of the Steam Deck.

Expected arrival this summer with some unclear elements

The DeckHD is currently available for pre-order on its official website, cited in source below. It is displayed at an estimated price of 99 dollars. But this does not take into account the management of customs fees or any taxes until proven otherwise. The note could therefore be otherwise more salty for the screen to reach us.

Another vague point concerning this FX Technology product: its impact on the autonomy of the Steam Deck. Given the much higher definition of the DeckHD, this could greatly affect the duration of use of the console, even if it is used in 1280 x 800.

On paper, this new screen solution for the Steam Deck therefore appears attractive, but it is still necessary to see the concrete application before taking the risk of pre-ordering it.

Valve Steam Deck

  • Take advantage of your Steam library everywhere
  • Excellent performance
  • A very correct autonomy

After reviewing the various aspects of the Steam Deck, it’s time to answer the questions posed in the introduction. If you are an occasional gamer, go your way and treat yourself to a Switch. Cheaper, more compact, easier to use, you will certainly find what you are looking for. Especially since an impressive number of very good Nintendo or independent games are available on this console.

The Steam Deck is primarily intended for PC players who are already Steam users and who have a substantial library of games. In this case, the Steam Deck allows you to play in excellent conditions everywhere, whether you travel a lot, whether you prefer to play in the hammock in your garden or warm under the duvet. Despite some limitations – mainly games using anti-cheat software – the magic works, the performance is excellent, the battery life is very correct, the grip could be improved, but still comfortable.

There’s not much missing from Valve to make the Steam Deck an exceptional first “console”: improved controls, especially for small hands, an OLED screen and successful software. On this last point, let’s bet that Valve will improve its formula quickly. During the test period, many feedbacks were taken into account with very transparent communication. Valve seems to believe a lot in its product and put the means into it. There remain hackers of all kinds, emulation fans or tech addicts who want a powerful and compact machine to indulge their passions: with the Steam Deck, Valve offers them a tailor-made, totally open system. We can’t wait to see what the community will do with it, but the future of the Steam Deck looks very bright.
