the studio harshly criticizes the compilation and SEGA

One of the developers of Sonic Origins is absolutely not happy with the final result of this new compilation. If he takes his share of responsibility, he also blames SEGA for releasing the games in this state.

Available since June 23, Sonic Origins is not to everyone’s taste and especially not one of the developers. This revealed behind the scenes of a buggy game that should have been postponed.

Bugs galore for Sonic Origins?

The launch of the retro Sonic Origins compilation does not go as planned. A few hours after the release, Simon Thomley, co-founder of Headcannon Games, is unhappy with the result. In question, a final version too sloppy according to him.

It’s frustrating. I’m not going to lie that there were no issues in the version provided to SEGA, but what’s in Sonic Origins isn’t what we submitted to them either.. The integration introduced bugs that logic would dictate are our fault, but many of them are not. When it comes to Origins, we were outsiders creating a separate project which then morphed into something totally different.

We knew from the beginning that there would be very tight deadlines and we worked hard to meet them. So that this project can be realized and released. Again, I can take responsibility for my mistakes and those of my team. There have been. Actual mistakes, omissions, things we noticed but weren’t allowed to correct near the end. It’s absolutely not perfect and it partly comes from us.

Simon Thomley has worked on various remasters of The Blue Hedgehog, including the third installment. He also says he is very disappointed with the state of this episode and Origins in general. But their attempt to warn SEGA came to nothing…

A postponement refused by SEGA

Even if the developer was not satisfied before submitting the compilation to SEGA, he campaigned with his colleagues for a postponement… refused.

We asked to make major corrections as we approached the submission of the compilation to SEGA. But we were not allowed due to the rules about it. We repeatedly wanted to delay Sonic Origins but were told that was not possible. We have offered to get back to work to make fixes and updates after release, but we don’t know if that will happen.

This will probably make you regret the withdrawal of five Sonic games from the various digital stores.

Sonic Origins is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
