the studio’s next game already looks promising

Cory Barlog, the director of the God of War reboot and the creative director of Ragnarök, returns to us with the tease of his next project at Santa Monica Studio. We’re already salivating.

With the reboot of God of War and its sequel Ragnarök, Cory Barlog has clearly showcased his talents in producing excellent games. Just knowing that he’s embarking on a new project at the equally talented Santa Monica Studio can only intrigue us. Especially since the project seems to be particularly well supported.

God of War director returns to the forge

God of War Ragnarök was supposed to mark the end of the Norse saga for Kratos and Atreus. Santa Monica Studio, however, created a surprise with Valhalla, a free rogue-lite DLC of impressive quality. This sumptuous saga, exclusive to PlayStation, is primarily due to Cory Barlog. He had in fact directed the reboot episode, then held the position of creative director for its sequel. It seems that the man is ready to put on the director’s hat again to oversee Santa Monica Studio’s next project.

In any case, this is what we can understand from his latest publication on X (formerly Twitter. ” I see some early things coming together for this thing I’m working on. And GOD, the people I get to work with at Santa Monica are just fucking brilliant. Video games are cool “. His excitement is clearly palpable, and so is ours. In any case, this new project seems to be in very competent hands.

We take the same and start again ?

For now, we can only speculate about this new project from Cory Barlog. On the one hand, the Valhalla DLC is a priori not the last time we will want to return to God of War Ragnarök. Its screenwriter Orion Walker had in any case indicated that it “ does not mark the end of the story “. On the other hand, we know full well that there will not be a third game centered on Scandinavian mythology.

This famous new project could, however, relate to the God of War franchise. Especially since the brilliant composer of its soundtrack Bear McCreary seems to be collaborating with Santa Monica again. Could we see Kratos dabble in Egyptian mythology or, let’s be crazy, Chinese or Japanese mythology? Or could we instead be treated to a spin-off centered on Freya? Or is it a completely different project? It’s still too early to tell. But with Cory Barlog at the helm and all the talent from Santa Monica behind it, we can probably expect some very heavy stuff.
