“The symphony of lightning”: an ode to sensitivity by Zaho de Sagazan: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

I didn’t even think I needed to write. And when I finished writing, I said to myself: this is the most beautiful thing I have written and it is the truest thing, which resembles me the most.

Zaho de Sagazan, author, composer, performer, was still unknown to the general public barely a year ago. After having won several musical springboards, the 23-year-old young artist released her first album on March 31, 2023, “La symphonie des éclairs” (Disparate/Virgin). In June, Zaho de Sagazan was to open for Stromae, at La Défense Arena, before the cancellation of the tour was announced. In a few months, she has become the new hope of French song.

The story of a small storm

“It’s always beautiful above the clouds/But if I were a bird, I would dance in the storm/I would cross the clouds like the light does/I would listen to the symphony of lightning in the rain “.

The one that some already compare to Brel admits to having taken three years to write this title full of sensitivity, “It didn’t take me at all just an afternoon to write”. “The Symphony of Lightning” tells the story of a small storm which would have liked to be a sun, and which discovers that being a storm ultimately has quite a few advantages. “It’s a metaphor for sensitivity”, explains Zaho. But the song is mainly about the woman who wrote it: “I was there for a very long time, and I still am, someone very sensitive. I thought for a long time that it was a fault.”. It was when she discovered music that Zaho de Sagazan realized to what extent her sensitivity was an immense quality. She regrets the lack of recognition of this characteristic: “I think there are people who die still thinking it’s a flaw.”

Be very sensitive

The young artist mentions the difficulty in managing your emotions, particularly when you are young. “When you feel emotions taking control of your body, it can be very unpleasant. It’s even painful”. Zaho de Sagazan confides: “It prevented me from communicating.” According to her, this overflow of emotions leads to not being understood “because you cry for nothing. The author chooses the word storm to evoke this uncontrollable inner hubbub. By writing it, she knows that this song is important to her, “because it described my whole life”. When she sings it, Zaho realizes that this title is also important for others: “It’s very strong”. She often cries when she sees “a few similar small storms” who cry while listening to it. The singer recalls that “it’s never ridiculous to cry, it feels good”whether for girls or boys.
