Some taxpayers have inadvertently received housing tax notices in recent days. The tax authorities promise to exempt the people concerned, who must nevertheless come forward.

French people who have recently moved were surprised, to say the least, by receiving housing tax notices by mistake. The General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) warns that affected citizens will obviously be exempt, but the incident has still caused confusion. Some even thought it was a scam when they opened their email. Let’s study all this in more detail.

Housing tax notices on second homes sent in error

It is possible that you have wrongly received a council tax notice, as our services have two known addresses for you. » The message, published on X (formerly Twitter), comes directly from Public Finance. Because yes, you may have had the unpleasant surprise of receiving a tax notice that you simply did not see coming. But rest assured, this is neither a scam nor your fault.

The DGFiP explains that the erroneous notices are due to the presence of two addresses in its databases. Some taxpayers have received housing tax notifications for a second home, even though they do not have one from their online tax space.

A 29-year-old from Toulouse, for example, was faced with this situation, receiving an e-mail demanding 1,500 euros in housing tax, even though he is not the owner. Somewhat taken aback, the young man immediately suspected a scam. The Tax Office reassured and promised that the errors would be corrected. The people concerned will still have to react.

If you are concerned, do not forget to report yourself to the tax authorities

The DGFiP did not specify the number of taxpayers affected, but it invites those concerned to report. Despite the assurance of exemption, confusion persists among those who have wrongly received council tax notices. And the pressure is mounting, because the payment deadline has been set for December 15.

At the same time, French people having to pay housing tax can access their opinions online since Tuesday. Because let us remember, if this tax on main residences has been abolished by the State, that on secondary residences remains.

The DGFiP encourages taxpayers to carefully check their notifications and emails to avoid confusion. For those not making monthly payments, payment is open, while others will have access to their notice from November 20.
