The Tesla Model Y outperforms any car with this new record

The enthusiasm around the Tesla Model Y does not weaken. It is even quite the opposite that is happening, as illustrated by the latest figures for the automotive market in Europe. This record proves that the Tesla Model Y is superior to any car, whether gasoline, diesel or electric.

It’s a new coup for Tesla, which is definitely no longer a niche brand. Over the first six months of the year, its Model Y was the best-selling car in Europe, all engines combined, with just over 125,000 registrations.

By comparison, Tesla had sold about 40,000 copies of its electric SUV in the first half of 2022. Year-on-year, sales therefore increased by 211.7%. The significant price reductions adopted in recent months are obviously not unrelated to this phenomenon.

The performance of the Model Y has an important symbolic aspect, because it is the first time that an electric car ranks number one in sales over a six-month period in Europe. The podium is completed by two thermal models: the Dacia Sandero and the Volkswagen T-Roc.

What is quite remarkable is that the craze around the Model Y is not limited to the European continent alone. The success of this vehicle is indeed worldwide, despite increasingly fierce Chinese competition. This electric car is indeed the best-selling car in the world during the first quarter of 2023. It could therefore become the best-selling car of the year, as Elon Musk predicted in 2022.

A sinusoidal sales curve

As noted Automotive News, Model Y sales in Europe varied greatly from month to month. In January and April, the electric SUV, for example, only ranked 17th in the ranking, while it occupied the top step of the podium in February and March, which was its best month of the semester (more of 46,000 registrations).

This is quite normal, because if the Model Y is produced in Germany, in Berlin, another factory is also running at full speed: that of Shanghai in China. The cars then come by boat, approximately every two months, which explains these monthly variations.

In May, the Model Y finished second in the top sales in Europe, behind the Dacia Sandero. It finally regained its first position in June, its second best month of the year after that of March (29,765 units registered).

The Tesla Model 3 in retreat

The success of the Model Y is not without consequences on the performance of the Model 3, which is clearly relegated to the background. Despite a good month of June, the electric sedan ended the first half in 50th place, with 38,843 registrations on the meter.

Several models present in the top 50 exist both in internal combustion and in 100% electric. This is for example the case of the Peugeot 2008 and 208, the Opel Corsa and Mokka, the Hyundai Kona, the Mini and the Hyundai Kona. However, as the firm behind these figures does not give the sales mix model by model, we do not know what the volumes of the electric versions of these different cars are.

It should also be noted lastly the absence of several important electric models in the ranking. We are thinking, for example, of the Renault Mégane e-tech, the MG4 and the Volkswagen ID.3. The Dacia Spring is not included either, despite its good performance in France.

It should also be noted that the month of June 2023 is historic, since sales of electric cars have exceeded those of diesel cars.
